Gabrielle Chanel was born on August 19, 1883. With the death of her mother, her father gave her up. She will pass her youth in an orphanage in Corrèze. She will be called "Coco" to have interpreted a song which spoke about a lost dog called "Coco". Indeed, Miss Chanel, during some time, was very attracted by the scene.


In 1910, Coco Chanel set in a room of the street Cambon in Paris. At the entry, it wrote there on a small plate "Chanel Modes". Creative on caps, she decides to impose her line of clothing. In 1913, she opens iher first shop in Deauville and obtains regular customers quickly.

For the creation of her first perfume "CHANEL N°5", in 1921, Ernest Beautiful, creator of perfume with the course the tsars of Russia, presented at Coco Chanel two series of numbered samples from 1 to 5 and 20 to 24. She chooses the sample n° 5. With the question "which name you will give it?", she answer: "I launch my collection on May 5, fifth month of the year, leave it to it number which it carries and this number 5 will carry chance to it". Coco Chanel drew the original bottle, a very simple bottle. She affirmed that what was inside than the bottle itself was much more significant.


In 1954, during an interview, a journalist requested from Marilyn Monroe what it carried to sleep, the actress answered naively: "some drops of N° 5". Without wanting it, the declaration of Marilyn made a superb advertising slogan. Which chance for Chanel that Marilyn made this consent because, since, N°5 remains the product high-speed spotlight of the house.

Coco Chanel entrusted the manufacture and the distribution of her perfumes to Pierre Wertheimer, a famous businessman (owner of the Bourjois Company).


Between 1920 and 1930, Coco Chanel launched several new perfumes of which CHANEL n° 22 in 1922, CUIR DE RUSSIE in 1924, GARDENIA, in 1925, BOIS DES ILES in 1926 (compositions of Ernest Beaux reconstituted in 1983 per Jacques Polge). During several years, any new creation, because of the war and the closing of the couture house.

CHANEL N° 19 owes her name with the date of birth of Coco Chanel, this fragrance was composed by the successor of Ernest Beaux, Henri Robert. CHANEL N° 19 was launched on 19 August 1970, the day of the 87th anniversary of Coco Chanel, she died a few months later. Launching also of POUR MONSIEUR and ANTAEUS.

In 1974, Henri Robert gave rise to Christalle. Karl Lagerfeld took the Chanel house again in 1984. The new "nose" of Chanel, Jacques Polge, composed COCO, in homage to Miss Chanel, the traditional bottle of the n° 5 created by Coco Chanel in 1921 was deliberately taken again.


“EGOISTE” was launched in 1990, male fragrance dominated by the sandal of Mysore.
In 1996, a very new perfume, “ALLURE”, was created.

In 2002, launching of COCO MADEMOISELLE

The Wertheimer family always holds the Chanel Company. During many years, Chanel will use celebrity faces for the advertising campaigns of CHANEL N°5, of which Catherine Deneuve (in the United States), then, Carole Bouquet which incarnates, for the house Chanel, the ideal French woman today.

In 2002, creation of a new fragrance "CHANCE" distributed to the United States and Canada. “CHANCE” will make its appearance in the European and Asian countries in spring 2003.
